Two Different Ways of Giving Thanks
There were two beggars who passed by a wealthy house every day.
The owner would throw coins to them daily.
The taller beggar would loudly say:
“Thank you, sir! You are so kind! May you live a long and healthy life!”
But the smaller, thinner beggar would quietly say:
“Thank God for His blessings.”
Each day, the owner heard two different kinds of gratitude:
One thanked him, while the other thanked God.
At first, he did not mind.
But over time, he began to feel uncomfortable.
Finally, he thought:
“I am the one giving him money, yet he thanks God instead of me. I will teach him a lesson.”
A Test of Gratitude
The wealthy man went to a bakery and ordered two identical loaves of bread.
One was ordinary.
The other was hollowed out and filled with precious jewels, then carefully sealed.
When the beggars arrived, he gave:
- The ordinary loaf to the smaller beggar
- The jewel-filled loaf to the taller beggar

“Now he will learn the difference between thanking me and thanking God.”

“Yes.”
“And what about the jewels inside?”

“I thought it was bad bread, so I traded it.”

The one who thanked him sought more benefits.
The one who thanked God had no greed and was content.
