Buying a Miracle - A Moral Story on Faith
A touching inspirational story about a little girl who tries to buy a miracle to save her sick brother.
A Sister’s Love
Jane stood up straight so she could see her baby brother clearly in the crib.
She could smell medicine on the table beside him.
Her parents told her that her brother was very sick.
She did not understand what was wrong with him, but she knew he was unhappy.
He cried all the time.
Even now he was crying.
She gently whispered:
“Little brother, please stop crying.”
Miraculously, the baby stopped crying and looked at his sister with teary eyes.
She held his tiny hand. His chubby fingers, damp with sweat, grabbed her finger as if asking for help.
Jane gently squeezed his hand to comfort him.
The Conversation
She then heard her parents talking in the next room.
Even though Jane was only six years old, she knew when adults lowered their voices, it meant they were discussing something serious.
Curious, she kissed her brother and tiptoed toward the door.
Her father said:
“The surgery is too expensive. We cannot afford it. I can barely pay our bills now.”
Her mother replied:
“Only a miracle can save him now.”
Jane wondered:
“What is a miracle? Why don’t they just go get one?”
Buying a Miracle
She ran to her room and took one dollar from her piggy bank.
She decided she would buy a miracle for her brother.
Jane ran to the supermarket across the street.
There was a long line at the cashier.
She squeezed into the line, and surprisingly, no one complained. Some people even smiled at her.
The cashier asked kindly:
“Little girl, how can I help you?”
She replied:
“Thank you. I want to buy a miracle.”
The cashier was confused.
“I’m sorry… you want to buy what?”
“My brother is very sick. I want to buy a miracle.”
The cashier did not know what to say.
Just then, a well-dressed man stepped forward and asked:
“What kind of miracle does your brother need?”
Jane answered:
“I don’t know. My parents say he needs surgery.”
The man bent down and asked softly:
“How much money do you have?”
“One dollar,” she said.
The man picked up the coin and smiled.
“I think a miracle costs about that much today.”
“Let’s go see your brother. Maybe I have the miracle you need.”
The Miracle
Several months later, Jane watched her baby brother standing happily in his crib.
Her parents were talking with the well-dressed man.
It turned out he was a famous neurosurgeon.
Jane’s mother said:
“Doctor, we still don’t know who paid for the surgery. You said it was an anonymous donor who spent a lot of money.”
The doctor thought to himself:
“No.”
“It only cost one dollar… and the faith of a little girl.”
Moral of the Story
