The Economic Parable: A Moral Story on Expectations

A powerful economic parable about how belief and mindset can influence business success and failure.

The Economic Parable: A Moral Story on Expectations

The Economic Parable

Many years ago, I knew an old man who owned a small roadside restaurant along a highway.

At that time, the country was going through a serious economic recession.

Strangely enough, the old man was quite lucky.

His eyesight was poor, so he could not read newspapers.

His hearing was also weak, which meant he rarely chatted with others.

Because of this, he knew almost nothing about the economic crisis happening outside.

Since he did not know how bad the economy was, he continued working with great enthusiasm.

He repainted the front of his shop so it looked bright and attractive.

He placed advertising signs along the roadside so travelers could easily see his restaurant from far away.

The food in his shop was delicious and affordable.

Even people who had very little money often stopped by because the aroma was too tempting to ignore.

The old man worked very hard.

After earning enough money, he sent his son to college.

The Son Who Studied Economics

At college, the son studied economics.

He learned in great detail about the terrible condition of the national economy.

During Christmas vacation, he returned home.

When he saw that the restaurant was still doing very well, he said to his father:

“Dad, something is wrong.”

“You shouldn’t be having such good business. You seem happy as if the economic recession does not exist.”

He then explained the causes and consequences of the economic depression.

He told his father that people all across the country were saving money and reducing their spending.

The Old Man Changes His Behavior

After hearing his son’s explanation, the old man began to feel discouraged.

He thought to himself:

“If the economy is really this bad, maybe I shouldn’t repaint the shop this year.”

“I should save some money instead.”

“Perhaps I should put less meat in the sandwiches.”

“And if everyone is short of money, maybe I don’t need to put up those advertising signs along the road anymore.”

So he stopped all the efforts that had previously helped his business grow.

The Result

Soon, the business began to decline dramatically.

When the son returned home again during the Easter holiday, the father said:

“My son, I must thank you for telling me about the economic recession.”

“It is absolutely true.”

“Even my small restaurant has started to feel its effects.”

“My boy, a university education is really useful.”

“Experts truly are experts.”

Moral of the Story

Sometimes belief in negative expectations can create the very problem we fear.

Mindset can influence outcomes more than external circumstances.

Why This Story Still Matters Today

In business and in life, confidence, action, and optimism often shape results.

When people stop trying because they expect failure, they may unintentionally create that failure themselves.
