A Story About Misunderstood Kindness
The famous Chinese proverb Dog bites Lü Dongbin comes from a story about friendship, loyalty, and kindness that was misunderstood.
The Origin of the Proverb “Dog Bites Lü Dongbin”
According to Chinese legend, among the famous Eight Immortals of Penglai Island, one of them was Lü Dongbin.
Before becoming an immortal, Lü Dongbin was originally a scholar. However, he failed the imperial examinations twice. After those failures, he stopped pursuing official success and instead relied on the wealth left by his ancestors. He spent his time visiting friends, traveling through mountains and rivers, and living a carefree life.
Before Lü Dongbin became an immortal, he had a fellow villager and close friend named Gou Yao.
Gou Yao’s parents had both passed away, and he lived in extreme poverty. Feeling sympathy for him, Lü Dongbin became sworn brothers with him and invited him to live in his home. Lü Dongbin hoped that Gou Yao would study diligently so that he could achieve success one day.
An Unexpected Marriage
One day, a guest surnamed Lin came to visit Lü Dongbin’s house.
When he saw that Gou Yao was handsome and hardworking in his studies, he said to Lü Dongbin:
“Mr. Lü, I would like to marry my younger sister to Gou Yao. What do you think?”
Lü Dongbin worried that marriage might delay Gou Yao’s future success, so he tried to refuse.
However, after hearing about the proposal, Gou Yao himself became interested and agreed to the marriage.
Lü Dongbin then said:
“It is said that Miss Lin is both beautiful and virtuous. Since you - my young brother - have already decided, I will not stop you. However, after the wedding, I would like to sleep in the bridal chamber with the bride for the first three nights. Would you agree to this?”
Gou Yao was stunned when he heard this. After thinking about it carefully, he reluctantly agreed.
Three Strange Nights
On the wedding day, Lü Dongbin appeared cheerful and happy, while Gou Yao felt embarrassed and avoided meeting others.
At night in the bridal chamber, the bride sat by the bed with a red veil covering her head.
Lü Dongbin entered the room but said nothing. Instead, he sat by the table under the lamp and quietly read books.
The bride waited until midnight, but her “husband” never came to bed, so she eventually went to sleep by herself.
When she woke up the next morning, the man had already left.
The same thing happened for three consecutive nights.
The Truth Revealed
After three days passed, Gou Yao finally entered the bridal chamber.
He saw his wife crying sadly and hurried forward to apologize.
His wife said:
“Why have you spent the past three nights reading under the lamp without coming to bed? You came when it was dark and left before dawn.”
Gou Yao was shocked when he heard this.
After thinking for a moment, he suddenly understood and burst into laughter.
“So that’s what my elder brother intended! He was afraid that I would indulge in pleasure and forget my studies, so he used this method to motivate me.”
Both husband and wife were deeply moved.
They said together:
“We will definitely repay Brother Lü’s kindness in the future.”
Years Later
Several years later, Gou Yao passed the imperial examination and became a high-ranking official.
Soon afterward, he and his wife tearfully bid farewell to Lü Dongbin and left to assume his official post.
Eight years passed.
One summer, Lü Dongbin’s home accidentally caught fire. His large family property was burned into ashes.
Lü Dongbin had no choice but to build a small hut with broken tiles and bricks to shelter his wife and children. Life became extremely difficult.
After discussing it with his wife, he decided to seek help from Gou Yao.
After a long and difficult journey, he finally arrived at Gou Yao’s residence.
Gou Yao showed great sympathy and warmly welcomed him, but strangely never mentioned offering financial help.
Lü Dongbin stayed there for more than a month, yet Gou Yao never gave him any money.
Eventually Lü Dongbin believed Gou Yao had become ungrateful, so he left angrily without saying goodbye.
The Surprising Truth
When Lü Dongbin returned home, he was astonished to see that a brand new house had been built.
But on the gate were mourning papers, which meant someone in the household had died.
He rushed inside and saw a coffin placed in the main hall, while his wife was wearing mourning clothes and crying loudly.
When Lü Dongbin called out “My wife!”, she turned around in shock and tremblingly asked:
“Are you… a human or a ghost?”
It turned out that shortly after Lü Dongbin left home, a group of workers came and built a new house for his family.
Then another group arrived carrying a coffin and said that Lü Dongbin had died at Gou Yao’s house.
Realizing this must be Gou Yao’s plan, Lü Dongbin angrily took an axe and split the coffin open.
Inside was not a corpse, but a coffin filled with gold and silver treasures.
There was also a letter that read:
Gou Yao is not an ungrateful man
Gold and silver were sent to build your home
You once made my wife stay alone in the bridal room
Now I let your wife cry for you.
After reading the letter, Lü Dongbin finally understood everything.
He sighed with a bitter smile and said:
“My dear brother, your way of helping me has caused me so much trouble!”
From that moment on, the two families became even closer.
Because the name “Gou Yao” sounds similar to “dog bite” in Chinese, the story gradually evolved into the famous proverb:
“Dog bites Lü Dongbin — not recognizing the heart of a good person.”
