Skilled Incompetence: A Short Moral Story About Experience
A famous Chinese story from the Qianlong era about a master thief whose own experience led to his downfall.
The Story of Skilled Incompetence
During the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty, a mysterious master thief appeared in the capital.
This thief was famous for stealing treasures from the imperial palace.
He came without leaving a trace and disappeared like a ghost. Even though the Forbidden City had high walls, deep moats, and strict security, none of these obstacles seemed to matter to him. He could enter and leave the palace freely.
At first, the occasional disappearance of small items inside the palace did not attract much attention.
But one day, Emperor Qianlong discovered that the imperial jade seal in his royal study had vanished.
The emperor was furious and ordered a thorough search of the entire Forbidden City.
Strangely, three days later the jade seal reappeared mysteriously on the emperor’s desk.
Now Qianlong became frightened.
He thought to himself:
“If this thief can move so freely inside the palace, this time he only took the jade seal. But next time, if he decides to take my head, what would happen?”
Concerned and anxious, he immediately summoned his ministers to discuss a strategy.
Heshen’s Plan
During the meeting, the ministers remained silent.
Finally, the official Heshen stepped forward and said:
“Your Majesty, I have a plan to capture this thief.”
The emperor asked eagerly:
“What is your strategy?”
Heshen proposed three measures:
- Send three thousand imperial guards to strengthen the palace defenses.
- Install additional anti-theft mechanisms inside the palace.
- Require all citizens entering or leaving the capital to undergo identity and baggage inspections.
The emperor approved the plan immediately.
However, after six months, the thief was still active. Several treasures continued to disappear, and the strict security measures caused great inconvenience for the people of the capital.
Liu Luoguo’s Strategy
Eventually the emperor called another meeting.
This time he asked Liu Luoguo, who was known for his intelligence, to offer a solution.
Liu slowly raised three fingers and said:
“Your Majesty, in my humble opinion we should do three things.
First, withdraw all the extra guards stationed outside the Forbidden City.
Second, remove all the locks from the treasure vaults.
Third, open every chest that stores valuable treasures.”
“If we do this, we will certainly capture the thief.”
The emperor was puzzled.
“You are known as a wise man. Why would you suggest such nonsense?”
Liu simply smiled and said:
“Please try it, and you will see.”
The emperor followed his advice.
Within ten days, the master thief was captured.
Why Was the Master Thief Caught?
This thief had thirty years of experience and thousands of successful thefts.
His experience taught him a fixed method:
- Avoid the guards
- Break the lock
- Take the treasure
- Escape through the window
As long as he followed these steps precisely, no place was too secure to steal from.
But when he entered the palace this time:
- There were no guards
- The doors were not locked
- The treasure chests were already open
- Even the windows were gone
Everything he expected was different.
For the first time in thirty years, he felt confusion, doubt, and fear.
In that moment of hesitation, the palace guards rushed in and captured him.
Even after being arrested, the thief kept muttering:
“How could this happen…? How could this happen…?”
Moral of the Story
Sometimes our greatest strength can become our greatest weakness.
When we rely too heavily on past experience, we may fail to adapt to new situations.
Why This Story Still Matters Today
In today’s rapidly changing world, experience alone is not enough.
Success requires flexibility, open thinking, and the ability to adapt to new environments.
