The Magical Medicine Box Bedtime Story

A meaningful story about a magical doctor who learns that laughter is just as important as curing illness.

The Magical Medicine Box Bedtime Story

The Magical Medicine Box

Mole Doctor had a magical box. Whenever he called out the name of an illness, like “cold” or “stomachache,” and said the magic words “lala kaka gugu la,” the illness would disappear, because it was locked inside the box.

The Mole Doctor lived in the forest. Since most illnesses had already been trapped in the box, he had very little work to do.

One day, there was a knock on the door.

Knock, knock, knock.

He put on his glasses and opened the door. It was Mother Rabbit.

“Doctor, my child is sick.”

“Don’t worry. Tell me slowly,” he said, inviting her inside.

“My child… doesn’t smile anymore.” Her eyes were full of tears.

The doctor smiled and said, “Not smiling is not an illness. If there is nothing to laugh about, I wouldn’t smile either.”

He sent her home.

After a while, there was another knock.

Old Frog came in, holding a little frog.

“Hibernation is over, Doctor, but my child still doesn’t smile. What should I do?”

The doctor looked at the little frog and said, “That’s simple. Your child hasn’t fully woken up yet. When spring comes, he will smile.”

He sent them home as well.

Soon, someone knocked again.

“Ah, Mr. Fox, how are you?”

“Not well. My child hasn’t smiled for two months. I’ve tried tricks and jokes, but nothing works.”

Now the doctor was surprised. Three cases, all about not smiling.

“Could this really be a kind of illness?” he wondered.

“Please bring your child to me. I will examine him carefully.”

After the fox left, the doctor checked his book.

It said: “Children love to laugh. A child who does not smile cannot be called a child.”

Just then, there was a loud banging on the door.

A crow rushed in.

“I’m hungry! I want to eat what’s inside your magical box!”

“You can’t! It’s full of illnesses!” the doctor said.

“You’re lying!” The crow pried the box open with its sharp beak.

But there was nothing inside.

“You’re so stingy!” the crow shouted and flew away angrily.

The doctor panicked.

“Oh no! The illnesses are escaping!”

He quickly sat on the lid, trying to hold it shut.

But it was too late.

All the illnesses—colds, stomachaches, and more—escaped into the forest.

At that moment…

Laughter came from inside the box.

It was the laughter of children.

Suddenly, the doctor remembered.

Last autumn, a little field mouse had eaten a “laughing mushroom” and couldn’t stop laughing. When he used the magic words, he had accidentally locked the child’s laughter inside the box… together with the illnesses.

The Mole Doctor burst into laughter.

“Even though the illnesses have escaped, the children can laugh again!”

The illnesses spread back into the forest.

And the Mole Doctor became busy once more.
