The Little Brave Badger
“Little Badger, come quickly!” his mother suddenly cried out from the kitchen.
He ran over at once and saw that she was about to faint.
“Mom, what’s wrong?” he asked, holding a fly swatter.
“A… a cockroach…” she turned her head away and pointed at the stove.
“There’s nothing scary about a cockroach,” Little Badger said with a smile. Smack! He killed it in one hit.
“Oh dear, Little Badger, come here!” his mother called again, this time from the balcony.
He rushed over and saw that the freshly washed clothes had fallen to the ground.
“Mom, what happened?” he asked, now holding a broom.
“Look… a… a gecko!” she closed her eyes tightly, afraid to look at the wall.
“There’s nothing to be afraid of,” he said, chasing it away. Then he patted her gently.
“Don’t worry, Mom. It’s gone now. Geckos are actually helpful. They catch mosquitoes.”
“Oh my! What is that?!” his mother suddenly screamed and fainted for real.
“Mom, what’s wrong this time?” he ran over and found her lying on the sofa.
The sewing box had opened, and inside was a small crocodile toy.
“Mom, this isn’t real,” he said, helping her drink some sugar water.
“It’s plastic. Dad got it as a gift when he bought a crocodile-brand shirt.”
His mother was very timid. Since his father was not home, Little Badger had to protect her.
He was the “man of the house.”
At night, his mother could not fall asleep.
“Little Badger… I think I hear footsteps…” she said in a trembling voice.
He poked his head out from under the blanket and listened carefully.
“Oh, that’s just someone walking outside.”
After a while, she trembled again.
“Listen! Someone is shaking the window!”
He got up and closed it tightly.
“No one is there, Mom. It’s just the wind.”
Soon after, she almost cried.
“Who is running in the attic? Could it be a monster?”
He gathered his courage and went up to check.
“No monster, Mom. It’s just a mouse passing by.”
At midnight, she woke up in fright.
“Little Badger! I hear a wild boar knocking on the door! Bang! Bang! Bang!”
He picked up a wooden stick and stood behind the door.
Creak… He opened it.
A wild boar was really standing there.
“Move aside, you little brat!” it showed its sharp tusks. “I’m here to rob you!”
“M… Mom… the boar… it’s real…”
Little Badger panicked and ran away, dropping the stick.
Thud! A heavy sound echoed.
The wild boar fell to the ground.
It turned out that his mother had also gotten up. She picked up the stick and struck the boar hard on the head.
Soon, the police arrived and took the robber away.
Little Badger was about to praise his mother for being so brave when suddenly, she collapsed again.
“Mom, the bad boar has been taken away. We’re safe now,” he said.
She raised one arm weakly, her face pale, eyes closed:
“Little Badger… help me…”
He looked carefully…
There was still a tiny beetle on her arm.
