When I was nine years old, during one cold winter, my father took me to the northern countryside to spend Christmas with my grandfather. He owned a small farm there, quiet and peaceful, surrounded by trees and open land covered in snow.
One day, while I was playing outside, I noticed something strange. Among the fig trees in front of the house, one looked completely lifeless. Its bark was peeling off, its branches had turned dry and yellow, and when I touched one of them, it snapped off easily with a brittle sound.
To my young eyes, the tree was clearly dead.
A Lesson from Grandfather
I ran to my grandfather and said, “Grandpa, that tree is already dead. Let’s cut it down and plant a new one.”
But my grandfather gently shook his head.
He said, “Maybe it looks like it’s gone. But after winter, it might grow again. It could just be gathering strength.”

The Miracle of Spring

As I grew older, I became a primary school teacher. Over more than twenty years of teaching, I encountered many situations that reminded me of that tree.
There was Pierre, a boy who couldn’t even memorize the alphabet and struggled with a speech disorder. Years later, he became a well-known lawyer.
There was another boy, once the most troublesome and lowest-performing student in class. Later, he became a top university student and eventually a successful executive in a large company.
But the most meaningful example was my own son, Brown.
When he was young, he suffered from polio and was almost completely disabled. Many people thought he had no future.
But I remembered my grandfather’s words.
I never gave up on him. I encouraged him constantly, telling him not to lose hope.
Today, he has completed his university education and works as a librarian. Even though only three fingers on his left hand can move, and even simple actions are difficult for him, he has built a meaningful life.

Looking back, I have realized something important.
As long as we do not give up too quickly, there is always a chance for change.
Throughout my life, I have faced many difficult and discouraging moments. But my grandfather’s simple advice has always guided me.
It reminded me to look beyond the present, to believe that after every winter, there is always a spring waiting.
