The Turtle and the Partridge

A touching moral story for kids about a mother’s love, honesty, and truth. A meaningful short story that teaches a powerful life lesson.

The Turtle and the Partridge

Two Mothers and Their Children

Once upon a time, a mother turtle and a mother partridge lived together in a small house outside a village.

They were good friends and, interestingly, both were expecting babies at the same time.

One day, they went fishing together by the river — and there, both gave birth to their sons.

Each mother loved her child deeply and treasured him more than anything in the world.

This touching beginning makes it one of those classic children’s stories with morals about family and love.

A Selfish Decision

A few days later, the partridge had to leave for an errand.

She asked the turtle to take care of her baby.

The turtle agreed.

But after the partridge left, the turtle compared the two babies.

She felt that her own child was not as beautiful as the partridge’s baby.

Driven by jealousy, she made a selfish decision — she swapped the two babies.

The Dispute

When the partridge returned, she was shocked.

Her baby was gone, and a baby turtle was lying in its place.

She questioned the turtle, but the turtle denied everything.

Heartbroken, the partridge went to the village and asked for help.

The villagers gathered, and wise elders came to judge the situation.

The Wise Test

One elder asked:

“Which child is yours?”

Both mothers claimed the same baby.

They argued fiercely, unwilling to give up.

Finally, the elder said:

“If we cannot decide, we will cut the child into two and give each of you half.”

The turtle agreed immediately.

But the partridge cried out:

“No! Please don’t hurt the child. If necessary, I give up my claim — just let him live.”

Truth Revealed

The elder smiled and said:

“This child belongs to the partridge. A true mother would never allow her child to be harmed.”

The truth was revealed.

The partridge got her baby back.

The turtle was left ashamed before the entire village.

Moral of the Story

True love is selfless — it protects, even at the cost of personal loss.
