A young man went to the mountains to work as a woodcutter.
Every day he entered the forest and worked extremely hard chopping wood.
While others rested, he continued working. He refused to stop until the sun had completely set.
He believed that while he was young, he should work harder so that one day he could succeed.
However, after more than half a month, he realized something surprising.
He had never once beaten the older woodcutters in productivity.
He could not understand why.
Even when the older workers rested, he continued chopping wood. So why were their results still better than his?
The young man thought deeply about the problem.
He assumed he simply wasn’t working hard enough, so he decided that the next day he would work even harder.
But the next day his results were even worse than before.
At that moment, one of the older woodcutters invited him over for tea.
The young man thought to himself:
“My results are already terrible. How can I waste time resting?”
So he replied loudly:
“Thank you! But I don’t have time!”
The old woodcutter smiled and shook his head.
“You foolish boy,” he said. “If you keep chopping wood without sharpening your axe, your results will only get worse. You have plenty of energy, but you are using it blindly.”
The young man soon realized something.
Whenever the older workers rested, drank tea, or chatted, they were also sharpening their axes.
That was why they could cut down trees faster and more efficiently.
The old woodcutter patted the young man on the shoulder and said:
“Young people must work hard. But remember to use your strength wisely. Never rely on brute force alone.”
He then held up his newly sharpened axe, shining brightly in the sunlight.
Moral of the Story
What you need is not simply to stay busy.
What you need is efficiency.
By improving your skills and abilities, you can achieve more while using less effort.
