Drawing Water: A Moral Story on Thoughtfulness

The Wisdom of Drawing Water

In ancient Persia, a king was hunting and happened to pass by a farm.

There he saw a young woman and ordered her to bring him some water to wash his feet.

The woman immediately went to the well and brought him water.

When the king washed his feet, he noticed the water was warm and very comfortable.

Then the king said:

“I would like to wash my face. Bring me more water.”

The woman again went to the well and returned with another bucket.

This time the water was cooler, and when the king washed his face, he felt refreshed.

After that the king said:

“I am thirsty now. Bring me some water to drink.”

The woman went back to the well once more.

This time the water was very cold and refreshing. The king drank it in one gulp.

The king was pleased and asked her:

“Why was the temperature of the water different each time you brought it to me?”

The young woman respectfully answered:

“Your Majesty,

When you wanted to wash your feet, I drew water from the top layer of the well, where the sunlight reaches, so the water was warmer.

When you wanted to wash your face, I drew water from the middle layer, where the water is cooler.

When you wanted to drink, I drew water from the bottom of the well, where the water is the coldest and purest.”

The king was deeply impressed.

He thought to himself:

“This woman is thoughtful and attentive. She would make a perfect queen.”

He immediately took her back to the palace and made her one of his queens.
