Buddha, Why Didn’t You Help Me? A Moral Story

A Devoted Believer
On a mountain called Nanshan stood a temple with a statue of Buddha.
People believed that this Buddha was extremely powerful and that sincere prayers would always be answered.
A man decided to test this belief.
To show his devotion, he carried offerings of chicken, pork, and fish up the mountain on Buddha’s birthday.
Despite exhaustion, he refused to stop or rest because he feared it might show disrespect.
After great effort, he finally reached the temple and prayed sincerely, asking Buddha to help him pass the imperial examination.
A Beggar at the Temple Gate
As he left the temple, a beggar approached him.
The beggar said he had not eaten for three days and begged for a little food from the offerings.
The man refused and drove him away, worried that the beggar would dirty the food.
That night, the hungry beggar froze and starved near the temple.
A sick dog had tried to share warmth with him, but the beggar also rejected the dog.
Both eventually died from cold and hunger.
Six Months Later
Six months later, the man failed the exam again.
Angry, he returned to the temple and demanded to know why Buddha had not helped him.
Buddha asked him a simple question:
“Why should I help you?”
Buddha then summoned the spirits of the beggar and the dog.
They explained how both had asked for small kindness but were rejected.
Buddha said:
“Helping you succeed would have been easy for me.
But you refused to help others when it was within your power.
Why should I do for you what you were unwilling to do for others?”
With that, Buddha threw away the man’s examination destiny.
Moral of the Story
If we refuse to help others when we have the ability, we cannot expect others to help us when we need it.
Kindness and generosity often return in ways we cannot see immediately.
