The Most Precious Thing: A Buddhist Moral Story

A touching story about love, destiny, and the realization that the most precious thing in life is the happiness we hold in the present moment.

The Most Precious Thing: A Buddhist Moral Story

The Spider in the Temple

Long ago there was a temple called Yuanyin Temple where many people came every day to burn incense and worship Buddha.

On a beam in front of the temple lived a spider that had spun its web there.

Because it was constantly surrounded by incense and the sincere prayers of worshippers, the spider gradually developed spiritual awareness.

After one thousand years of cultivation, its spiritual wisdom had grown greatly.

One day Buddha visited the temple. Seeing how devoted the worshippers were, he was pleased.

As he was leaving, he happened to notice the spider on the beam.

Buddha stopped and said:

“We have met by fate. Let me ask you a question. After a thousand years of cultivation, what have you realized?”

The spider was very excited and agreed.

Buddha asked:

“What is the most precious thing in the world?”

The spider thought for a moment and replied:

“The most precious things in the world are what we cannot obtain and what we have already lost.”

Buddha nodded and left.

Another Thousand Years

Another thousand years passed.

The spider continued its cultivation on the beam of the temple.

Buddha returned and asked again:

“Have you gained a deeper understanding of the question I asked you before?”

The spider answered the same:

“The most precious things in the world are still what cannot be obtained and what has already been lost.”

Buddha replied:

“Think about it again. I will come back.”

The Dewdrop

Another thousand years passed.

One day, a strong wind blew a sparkling dewdrop onto the spider’s web.

The spider gazed at the beautiful drop. It was crystal clear and shining like a jewel.

The spider grew very fond of it.

Every day it admired the dewdrop and felt extremely happy.

It believed those were the happiest days in its three thousand years of existence.

But suddenly, another gust of wind came and blew the dewdrop away.

The spider felt a deep sense of loneliness and sadness, as if it had lost something precious.

Soon after, Buddha appeared again and asked the same question:

“What is the most precious thing in the world?”

The spider thought of the dewdrop and replied:

“The most precious things are what we cannot obtain and what we have lost.”

Buddha said:

“If you truly believe that, then go to the human world and experience life.”

Reborn as a Human

The spider was reborn into a wealthy official’s family as a girl named Zhu’er.

Years passed, and when Zhu’er was sixteen, she had grown into a beautiful young lady.

One day the emperor held a grand celebration for the newly crowned top scholar Ganlu.

Many young women attended the banquet, including Zhu’er and the emperor’s daughter, Princess Changfeng.

Ganlu displayed his talents in poetry and music, impressing everyone present.

All the girls admired him deeply.

But Zhu’er was calm and confident, because she believed this was the destined relationship Buddha had given her.

A Meeting at the Temple

Some time later, Zhu’er accompanied her mother to Yuanyin Temple to pray.

Coincidentally, Ganlu was also there with his mother.

After the elders finished praying and started talking together, Zhu’er and Ganlu walked along the corridor and talked.

Zhu’er felt very happy to finally be close to the person she believed was her destined love.

But Ganlu showed no special feelings toward her.

Zhu’er asked him:

“Do you not remember what happened sixteen years ago at the spider web in Yuanyin Temple?”

Ganlu looked confused and replied:

“Miss Zhu’er, you are beautiful and kind, but perhaps your imagination is too vivid.”

After saying that, he left with his mother.

A Devastating Arrangement

A few days later, the emperor announced a marriage decree.

Ganlu was to marry Princess Changfeng.

Zhu’er was to marry Prince Zhicao, the crown prince.

The news struck Zhu’er like a thunderbolt.

She could not understand why Buddha would arrange such a fate.

For days she refused to eat or drink, falling into deep despair until her life was in danger.

The Truth Revealed

Prince Zhicao rushed to her bedside.

He said:

“Among all the girls at the banquet that day, I fell in love with you at first sight.

I begged the emperor again and again before he agreed to our marriage.

If you die, I will not live either.”

He raised a sword, preparing to take his own life.

At that moment, Buddha appeared.

He spoke to Zhu’er’s departing soul:

“Spider, have you ever wondered who brought the dewdrop to you?”

“It was the wind. And the wind also took it away.”

“The wind is Princess Changfeng. Ganlu belongs to her. For you, he was only a passing moment.”

“As for Prince Zhicao, he was once a small blade of grass growing in front of Yuanyin Temple.”

“He watched you for three thousand years and loved you for three thousand years, yet you never once lowered your head to notice him.”

Buddha asked again:

“What is the most precious thing in the world?”

The Final Realization

After hearing the truth, Zhu’er suddenly reached enlightenment.

She said:

“The most precious thing in the world is not what we cannot obtain or what we have lost.”

“It is the happiness we can hold in the present moment.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Buddha disappeared.

Zhu’er’s soul returned to her body.

She opened her eyes and immediately stopped Prince Zhicao from harming himself.

They embraced each other deeply.

Moral of the Story

The most precious thing in life is not what we long for but cannot have, nor what we regret losing.

It is the happiness and love we are able to hold and appreciate right now.

Why This Story Still Matters Today

In modern life, people often chase dreams that feel out of reach while overlooking the relationships and blessings already present around them.

This story reminds us that true happiness comes not from longing for what we lack, but from recognizing and valuing what we already have.

Learning to appreciate the present moment is one of the most powerful lessons for living a meaningful life.
